myFM: New Year's Resolutions...heck no!

You’ve seen the posts, then ads, the welcome to a new year, and new posts encouraging you to join the gym, start a new diet, and ditch all that you consumed over the past two weeks or longer. As tempting as it is to change it ALL, it’s less likely that you’ll reach your goals.

Speaking of which, what are your goals, or better your intentions as the new year begins? Not the get healthy and lose weight goals, but what about wanting to sleep better, wake feeling refreshed, or not want to nap at your desk or part way through the day? Energy is the number one improvement that I hear from clients, then there is improved skin health, better gut health, less bloating, and a deep and restorative good night's sleep without the brain fog in the morning. All very good goals to have.

How are you going to get there?

  1. Clear the counter or cupboards. Those lingering chocolates and cookies, any ultra-processed foods in a package, or box, or that have a barcode can either be put elsewhere for now or to the back, out of sight.
  2. Fill your fridge, freezer, and cupboards with colourful produce, frozen fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, apple cider vinegar, eggs, fish, and lean meats. Avoid processed meats.
  3. Start to stabilize your blood sugar levels by having a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar 20 minutes before a meal, and always having protein or fat with it. No bowl of cereal without some plain greek yogurt, for example. Listen to episode 143 for more about stabilizing your blood sugar level and the importance of inflammation, heart disease, and of course steering clear of diabetes and dementia.
  4. Hydrate with water, green tea, black coffee, herb teas, and coconut water, and dilute the juice if you have to add something to it.

I know the new year is a tempting time to focus on all the ‘things’, but remember that each morning brings a new day and that it is an opportunity to do differently and better than the day before. One step at a time, one mouthful at a time.
